Unstable wall at Lower Chirk Bank

Reported via mobile in the Retaining wall category anonymously at 14:37, Tue 12 November 2024

Sent to Shropshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 14160024.

This is a concern that I first reported on 11th April 2023. It was assessed as not requiring any action but the problem has since deteriorated further. A wall that extends from my boundary wall is damaged owing to overgrown vegetation behind it and a fallen tree/shrub. This has pushed a large stone out from the base of the wall which is at the edge of the road running through Chirk Bank. I am concerned that the stone will fall into the road, thus creating a hazard to road users, and also that the displaced stone is resulting in damage to the wall which will become increasingly unstable over time and create a further hazard.

  • Call received @ 12:10 on the 25/01/25 regarding the large stone which is a potential hazard. The lady has stressed that the large stone has moved again towards the road. Ideally needs removing as soon as possible before it goes into the highway and is hit by a vehicle.

  • When moving stone in question a tree behind is resting on the said stone which is why the stone is moving. The tree is going to fall when stone is removed. Chainsaw needed when moving tree .

  • The wall is on the move can you also assess the wall before it collapses the wall is being pushed forward by the tree behind.

  • Further to my recent updates (telephone discussions with your customer advisors 25/1 and 30/1) I have taken photos today of the wall to provide supporting evidence of the current worsening situation. As you can see, the dislodged stone has moved further towards the road, as compared to previous photos, and is now at a precarious angle and could fall onto the road at any time. As I have previously explained to an advisor, the reason that I have not removed the stone myself is that it is holding back a fallen tree. So to simply remove the stone would likely result in the tree sliding out onto the road which could be even more hazardous.

  • The dislodged stone fell onto the road today leaving a gap in the wall as seen in the first photo. I managed to remove the stone from the road and out of the path of any passing traffic. The stone is extremely heavy. It is now located just inside the pedestrian lane adjacent to my driveway, shown in second photo. There is no longer a danger from the stone itself. However, the source of the problem, ie fallen trees behind the wall putting pressure on the wall, will still need to be addressed as they will continue to cause damage to the wall and may lead to collapse.
