Drains and ditches blocked and potholes

Reported via desktop in the Drain blocked category by Robin Melley at 15:32, Tue 2 January 2024

Sent to Shropshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 14131698.

The ditches and drains have been looked at many times over the last 20 years, and pot holes have been periodically temporarily filled. Is it not just more economic and be a better outcome for residents and road users, for you to employ a contractor to do a permanent repair on the drains and to resurface the lane? We think it is and have said so repeatedly to many LA employees over the last two decades. Will you now please take appropriate action. There have been many accidents, personal injuries and damage to vehicles, most of which go unreported because of the apathetic responses over many years.

Updates

  • These are photos of just a few of the potholes, taken before the rain. I haven’t taken a photo of the mud on the lane, which has not been cleared for c20 years when I last saw a road sweeper on the lane.

The level of mud will be obvious when you do a site visit.

Will you PLEASE take action. The local residents have had to put up with a lane that is dogged with deep potholes, a lot of mud and it being turned into a raging torrent of water every time is rains heavily. This is all because of woefully inadequate maintenance, broken promises made by various LA employees and a lack of investment in the local roads and lanes used within this community and the surrounding villages and farms.

  • Customer has phoned in with an extra update on this issue after being advised to by FMS. He said that the regular pothole repairs are not good enough, the material put in them just gets washed out, so the lane needs to be properly resurfaced, rather than just regular patch jobs. He also asked if we could inspect the drainage system as it seems to either be inadequate or broken as it does not take the water away and turns the lane into a river whenever there is heavy rain. He said that he is more than happy to meet anyone coming out to investigate the issues raised in this report to show how bad they are and to discuss them.

  • I live at the other end of the road referenced by Robin. We have witnessed the sheer volume of water cascading down the road making it impossible to walk our dogs, not only due to the water but also our safety due to the road braking away at the verges, valleys being formed and potholes in the road. Furthermore, I note that there are very few drains carrying the water away into the mains drainage and as such it is falling into the Brook which is now more like a river due to the volume it is taking. This is causing large amounts of erosion and flooding along its path. Furthermore, the monkhopton Bank road is suffering a similar fate, no drains or limited uncovered with debrit drains meaning that galleys and potholes are being formed and again the water is trying to find a place to be taken away and again it is entering the Brook at the closest point to the B4368 end. This is causing mayhem for people trying to get in/out of the hamlet but also it is destroying our vehicles and the surrounding area that we live. This repeats every time we have heavy rain. I am more than happy to discuss further with anyone willing to talk about it and plead with you to assess the issue.

  • The issue you reported has been assessed and the necessary work will be included in our programme of upcoming maintenance.

Our priority is to be effective at responding to the most serious problems so at this time we are unable to provide an exact timescale.

In the meantime until these works can be undertaken, we will continue to undertake routine inspections, whereby notifiable issues are recorded and scheduled for action.

    State changed to: Action scheduled
