Dredging request for the brook - full of silt

Reported via desktop in the Watercourse category anonymously at 16:24, Thu 17 August 2023

Sent to Shropshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 14120852.

The silt in the stream has built up and the brook is a 3rd of size it should be. If an object gets caught Under footbridge this gets wedged and the water backs up and floods easily.

There is a small retaining wall but the stream is so silted up, you cant see the wall, the footpath runs on top of wall The Brook needs to be dredged to remove this built up of silt

  • Hi There, A photo to explain just how much the silt has built up, especially under the foot bridge. We would all be most grateful if this problem could be resolved before the next heavy rain and the Close floods! Thank you. All the best Frankie

  • To whom it may concern

We are moving to this close later this month and have been watching for updates on the brook closely. It is a little disheartening to have seen no response since August.

Could you please advise us of the outcome of the inspection that your council officers conducted? We have already seen the close flooded this last week when the rains came and are anticipating another series of floods with the arrival of Storm Babet.

Any reassurance you can offer would be most welcome. We would like to be able to move in without having to negotiate a flooded close!

    Many thanks Nick

  • Hello,

In the past week the close has flooded twice and residents here cut off! There's more rain due over the weekend and nothing in place to support the residents. There are children unable to access school and those unable to get to work. People here are also in need of care and their workers are unable to get to them!

This needs resolving quite quickly given that more rain is forecast. We're new to the area and hadn't anticipated the flooding to be quite so regular of an issue!

  • To whom it may concern

Further to my post yesterday morning, please see the attached photo of the condition of the brook this morning, taken by a friend living on Millstream who is now stuck for the weekend. I hope this serves as a useful prompt when considering the urgency of dredging the brook.

Any update you can give us would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks Nick

  • I've been sent these photos from a resident on Millstream who tells me that when the flood water subsides, the road is always left covered with mud like this.

This is totally unacceptable and the residents of Millstream and Brookside are out in forces volunteering to scrape as much of it away as possible. The problem is, there's no where for it to go except back to the brook!

We're moving to the close this week, our house is on the edge of the brook. We're really concerned that if this is a regular occurrence it's going to negatively impact not only our household but also continue to isolate and affect the community here.

I'd appreciate an update on what you propose to do here to support us.

    Many thanks Danielle

  • Any news on the 'update'? The problem is still here and its not going to go away on its own. Please can you have a look at this with some urgency. Thank you

  • Still no update, and the problem is slowly getting worse as time progresses. Something will have to be done at some point and it would be a great relief to us all if this was to happen before there is a disaster rather than afterwards. Please let us have your thoughts on the way forward. I would be willing to deal with the problem myself as long as i have permission. So who do i get that permission from? Your help on this would be greatly welcome. Thank you and Happy Christmas. Frankie

  • The brook has burst its banks again today, for the second time in a week. My family are in Shrewsbury for a medical appointment and currently will not be able to get home because the road has completely flooded, closing off safe access to Brookside Close.

Please can we have an update on when this work will be completed? This is an urgent piece of work.

  • In addition to the above, please see the attached photos. This is the highest I have seen it since we moved in.

Posted anonymously at 14:31, Tuesday 2 January 2024

  • I was in Shrewsbury for an appointment and was only able to get back home because a person down the lane in a high land rover was kind enough to drive me and my son down the road. A normal car wouldn't have made it, his land rover barely did - it came well up over his front grill.

I live right next to the brook, it's nearly into our garden and if the rain carries on will only get higher. We've been given sandbags in case but that's really not good enough. Every time it rains the brook bursts it's banks and the people in the close and down Millstream are cut off. Please give an update of when this is going to be rectified.

  • Hello again, I know this might be of little interest to the council and I'm sure you have bigger things to worry about, but acknowledgement of receipt of our concerns would be at least, polite. Please could someone give us an update ASAP. Thank you in advance and we look forward to your reply.

  • Hi There, its been 9 months since i wrote to you the first time. PLEASE will someone let us know where we are with this. It's dry at the moment and therefore the risk of flooding is low. But i WILL start raining again and when it does the risk will return. Please reply to this. Thank you Frankie
