Visibility restricted where Hodgson Road meets Haughton Rd

Reported via mobile in the Other Highways issue category anonymously at 11:45, Sat 20 May 2023

Sent to Shropshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 14114458.

I respectfully ask you consider either cutting the vegetation back to improve visibility or placing a mounted angle mirror so people can see vehicles heading out of Haughton village towards Shifnal along Haughton Road.

I have had a few near misses as I have sought to alight from Hodgson Rd and seen many others as people regularly speed as they come along this road out of Haughton village and you cannot see them. I am worried there could be a serious accident or even fatality here.

Shifnal Town Council did say you were proposing some traffic calming along Haughton road and while I can see some has been done by new medical practice it does not address this issue.

I come at this not just as a resident but as a former local government lawyer - planning and highways and now legal director dealing wit h Coronal law and health and safety at the strategic highway company. I just worry about safety and try and do what I can to prevent accident especially now dealing with the sad consequences.

I know you have really stretched resources and people should exercise care in driving but this could potentially be made safer with a mirror and/or vegetation management by the developer and perhaps an appropriate road sign.

I would be most grateful if you would come and do a site visit and consider my comments.

Kind regards

Louise Portman

  • After witnessing another near miss on 03/06/2023 at the junction of Hodgson Road/Haughton Road please can you look at the above comments and note there is no marked junction line, no visibility exiting Hodgson road both ways and the traffic coming from the M54 services island come very fast straight down past junction. It needs assessing as a matter of urgency before there is a accident/fatality.

  • Fully support the problem as outlined in the other comments. I also live in this area and use that junction regularly with my children in the car, and I am very worried about the high risk of a crash when exiting the estate - could a speed bump be added to slow down the drivers on Haughton Road?

  • As a resident on the estate I'd also like to add that visibility is extremely limited by vegetation on the exit of the junction, the only way to get out is to slowly creep and hope no one come round the corner at speed as there is no way to see them.

It's only a matter of time until there is a collision that the installation of some mirrors or better maintenance of the vegetation.

  • Action needs to be taken at the junction of Hodgson Road leading onto Haughton Road Shifnal. Visibility is very poor on leaving the junction. The speed of oncoming traffic along Haughton Road is often in excess of the speed limit - accident waiting to happen. Suggest a speed limit to approaching junction with signs and speed bumps

Crossing for school run time, Haughton Road/Newport Road Shifnal. Nightmare trying to cross with children. Two new developments built, new Surgery soon to be opened, this has increased foot fall and traffic. Accident waiting to happen. Urgent Action required.

  • It's hard to believe that this has been for some time and seems nothing has been done. Its only a matter of time until there is a serious accident at this junction in particular giving the speed that some people drive down that road. There is next to no visibility coming out of that junction. Gone forbid this doesn't but if if and when it does that these concerns are raised and that the safety concerns of the residents have been grossly ignored and display such a lack of duty of care from the council. This should be addressed as a matter of urgency.

  • The problem is that the hedges are right at the side of the road so unless you drive past them you cannot see the junction. I know homeowners near the junction facing Haughton road would prefer to keep these hedges for privacy, so could we move a part of the row of hedges(in green) on the left hand side, back so it is behind the footpath. This would maintain privacy but give a much better field of view when approaching the junction from the left hand side.(red triangle is field of view). There also needs to be markings at the junction as everybody is currently treating it as a free for all. Today a taxi driver was turning right onto Haughton Rd and was all the way over on the right hand side of the road. If a car would have been turning in coming from where he was exiting there could have been an accident as the person turning in would probably have seen him too late. Road markings would at least encourage people to use the correct side of the road. The junction is an accident waiting to happen as it is and I am amazed there have not been several accidents there already.

  • Visibility is so limited when leaving the estate onto the main road. I’ve had many near misses. One day I might not be so lucky.

  • I've experienced great anxiety at the level of risk when pulling out of Hodgson Road since living on the estate since Jan 21. I've had many people appear last minute when pulling out and I'm almost certain that their speed is excessive of the speed limit. Poor visibility and speed of people using mean that this is a disaster waiting to happen. I feel both of these issues need to be addressed to keep everyone safe. Urgent removal / relocation of the hedgerows and installation of a raised table junction, as implemented further down Haughton Road at the new surgery junction, as mentioned in other comments above, should seriously be considered.

  • We have looked into this issue and can advise that the work required will be completed in our programme of upcoming maintenance.

  • On 15 June you said the work would be done, but did not provide any details of when or indeed what. The vegetation is now almost completely obscuring right turn visibility to the point cars are having to pull out half way into Haughton road carriageway to see. Please confirm when these works are scheduled. People have advised of additional near misses, I myself nearly hit a motorcyclist who was keeping to the left on his approach from Haughton village two weeks ago.

  • Thank you Louise for commenting this, I totally agree. What were you planning to do and when Shropshire Council?. I also nearly hit a blood bike 3 weeks ago . The only reason I didn’t was that he wasn’t speeding (which is normally a common occurrence coming down from Haughton village) he was able to spot me and swerve as I was edging out for visibility. This needs sorting .

  • Shropshire Council posted Thursday 15 June 2023...... We have looked into this issue and can advise that the work required will be completed in our programme of upcoming maintenance. State changed to: Closed You have closed an issue that is still there?! How and why on earth would a Council do that? You close the issue when you fix the problem. Does someone have to die before you suddenly find the budget/will to fix this issue? If/when there is a serious accident at this junction, I hope Shropshire council have good Lawyers and people to stop the media barrage. As soon as there is an accident, then I will be straight to the media and they can read this page....

  • Its still an over grown hedge that needs cutting back. vehicles are at risk as visibility is greatly reduced and you are in the Haughton road before you can safely see anything approaching. Please cut back asap.

  • Shropshire Council.. if you think cutting 2 foot either side junction is going to fix this issue you are deluded . The non visability is from hedgerow much further down towards Haughton village . There also needs to be something done about speeding vehicles that come down through Haughton village from M54 services island , traffic calming , signage saying concealed entrance, a mirror and we still need road markings at the junction also a safe crossing place .

  • We have looked into the matter you reported and our investigation shows that no further action is required at this time.

State changed to: No further action

Posted by Shropshire Council at 11:10, Mon 20 November 2023

  • This problem has NOT been fixed. Who on earth at the Council has decided no further action is necessary?! The junction is still dangerous. If a councillor had to use this junction every day I wonder how long it would take to be made safe?

Posted by Ray smith at 14:11, Mon 20 November 2023

  • Most definitely not fixed! Some slight improvement was made when the bushes were slightly cut but still there are no road markings, no signage of concealed entrance. Traffic comes so fast along the whole road and by the time you have looked twice you there are vehicles there. We have to pull out from Hodgson Road half way into the Haughton Road to have any visabilty . Also a child was knocked down on this road last month. When will something be done ???
